For the Love of the Mother: A Journey into the Construction of Musicals, Identity Politics and the Assessment of Queer Theory explores essays around the construction of musicals, which form the basis of the creative work, For the Love of the Mother, a musical written and which was staged at Artscape, in Cape Town in 1999.

Various essays were developed as part of a Masters in Creative Writing at the University of Cape Town, and which are included in this work.

For the Love of the Mother, tells the story of Mike, a country boy, who moves to the big city to explore his sexuality. The musical follows his story of when he joins a drag club, where he falls in love with the club owner, Justin, and begins the exploration of becoming a drag artist. The twist in the plot arrives in the form of Mike's ex-girlfriend Sue, who has come from the small town to look for Mike. With weeks of rehearsals over, the opening night of the new show arrives, which heralds the spectacular arrival of the club's newest addition. A musical play which explores drag performance and the meaning of life!
